New programme stands, banners to hold up, Hog Roast and the stripes are back! We were all excited for the return to St Mary’s after Southampton’s ‘turbulent summer’ eager to see Ronald Koeman’s new look side take West Bromwich Albion to task.

Sadly, the actual football was very much a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show comes the dust cart’ as the two sides played out a ‘borefest’ lacking any real quality and it will have done nothing to detract the ‘say what you see’ television pundits from continuing their insistence that Saints are in disarray.

I coined a phrase during many games where Southampton failed to convert their chances last season that the side were ‘all flatulence, no excretion’ well yesterday they struggled to muster the flatulence.
