Five reasons Nathaniel Clyne is right man for England

When Roy Hodgson announced his England squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia on Thursday, Nathaniel Clyne was one of the new names to feature.

To most football fans this wasn’t overly surprising given his performances so far this season, but to Southampton fans it was nearly two years overdue.

Clyne has been fantastic since signing for Saints in 2012, and has seemingly improved with every summer. So much so in fact that most of the St. Mary’s faithful were far more fearful that it would be the full-back who joined the now infamously overstated ‘exodus’ rather than his primary competition in Calum Chambers.

It has been bizarre to watch a string of poor footballers and out-of-position centre-halves get a run out by Hodgson at right-back before Clyne was even given a look…
