You could say it was the ultimate respect paid by Mauricio Pochettino to his former team on Sunday, as his Spurs side made stifling Southampton their primary business.

In truth Ronald Koeman fell foul of the Argentinian’s one trick and failed to counter it.

That is not necessarily a surprise, plenty of managers failed to do so last season too, but it is frustrating given that as a Saints fan we know how you can.Send it long.

Koeman has shown that he is perfectly prepared to mix up the type of passing in the games so far, but perhaps didn’t utilise the ball over the top that Pochettino’s Saints often couldn’t cope with.
